You'll Love the People of Virgin RiverSep 26, 2009
By Dajo I read alot, and only one other author has ever made me like the characters enough that I actually missed them when the series was over! These are beautifully written and moving stories of love, loss, and triumph over circumstance, and of people that you'd love to have for friends. This series is one that will end up on your keeper shelf to be read, treasured, and re-visited in the years to come. Check it out!

rebutal for offensive and critical reviewApr 11, 2011
By Belinda Lee I was actually was somewhat offended by the writer of the "most critical" review.
That review spoke about how "annoying 'Mel' was and baby obsessed every novel is"... after reading the first of the series I can only say - big surprise it's baby obsessed: she's a MIDWIFE! Works with other medical people. DUH! Frankly, I didn't find it all that overly baby obsessed at all. I read a review that complained about how even the men were "baby obsessed" and implying, if not outright stating that real men don't do that. Well - my husband was a real man and so were his 12 brothers and brothers-in-law and I can tell you that when their wives were pregnant they were a little baby obsessed if they were around their wives. And I've never been around a pregnant woman with other woman and not heard EVERY birth experience possible. Really. But even considering that, I don't feel that the complainer of how baby obsessed the book is has a leg to stand on. Carr spent more time on the romantic interludes of Jack and Mel than she did on any of the births. As to annoying - well, unless you know what it means to be a widow (and I do) I can only say - shame on you for not trying to put yourself in her place - what was annoying? Did she not move on fast enough? Did she spend time crying and feeling sorry for herself? Did she think her life was over? Did she feel guilty every time she felt alive? You bet your life she did! And that's not really annoying - it's REAL! So - I say to that reviewer - grow up and look around you to see what life is really about. I know that books generally go for the happy ending and the ideal and we all know that life doesn't generally work that way - but we read (often) for that very reason - to get the happy endings, the ideals we all like to believe happen sometimes, somewhere. It doesn't make us sappy, or stupid. And I'm still trying to figure out who the functionally, mentally deficient character is...
I found the book to be well written. I don't know if Carr has experienced Mel's kind of loss (violently or otherwise), but I do know she has it down, so at the very least she has a good source to tell her. Yes, there are several story lines going on, but that, too, is pretty normal if you look at the title: Virgin River. It's not a book about A person. It's a book about A PLACE - one that has lots of people living in it. I thought she handled the various story lines well and the moving through time without too much detail (sometimes time just passed) was also normal. As a widow, I can tell you that time most certainly passes without any detail from time to time.
Overall, I found this book (along with all the others of Carr's that I have read) to be well put together and occasionally downright enchanting. I am very well-read and prolific (generally 20 books a week - fiction and non-fiction). I have very eclectic tastes as well. Carr is an author I will continue to collect in my physical (over 15,000 books in my personal library), as well as my electronic libraries.

Wonderful ReadsMay 18, 2009

All four books are outstanding! I couldn't put them down. She can weave a story that women of all ages will love and adore, and she understands how we think. The heroine, Mel, almost reminds me of Clare in the Outlander series.
