3Victorinox Skipper Swiss Army knifeSep 11, 2006
By AFSPECOPR "Amo Probos"
I like this knife because of what it tries to do, if not what is does.

Pros: Locking serrated edge knife is excellent for cutting line and it has a small flat ground section at the base of the blade. It is long enough to be functional and not too long to get arrested for carrying it in your pocket. The pliers work great and see the most use while sailing. The handles have a pebbled texture that improve grip while wet. Every sailor knows that a can opener and bottle opener are vital at sea and that twist off bottle caps are only found in the civilized world. The lanyard ring is good sized and can accomidate a wide range of connection options. The ubiquous toothpick and tweezers are always welcome accessories.

Cons: I selected this knife primarily because of the marlin spike with an intigrated shackle key. The marlin spike is rather much useless for intricate knot work and the shackle key is too small for larger shackles and located too close to the handle to provide good leverage for stuck or fouled shackles. The screw driver bit is too small in diameter and width to function well as a deck key.

I have rated this knife so low because a knife maker like Victorinox should know better and have made a better thought out knife for sailors. The fit and finish is typical of their high standards, but the knife is not what is should have been. They also make the "Helmsman" which lacks the pliers, why bother since that is one of the major selling points of this knife series.

3The quality disappointed me.Oct 12, 2010
By N. Aoun "N"
Plus;
1. The serrated blade is excellent and extremely sharp. I do like that it locks in place.
2. The knife does look good and the material seems solid.

Minus:
1. The reason I ranked it low is that the spring that reopens the pliers moved sideways from the 1st use and now every time I use it, I need to twist it back in position. By experience from previous swiss knives I know that this thing can break if I force it back in place.
2. Using the Phillips screwdriver to screw back a cabinet door that fell off on the boat, I noticed that this thing closes very easily and it did cut my finger.. So usable really only for gentle tasks.

4A lot of knifeApr 05, 2010

4/4/2010-
This is a lot of knife.
By that I mean that it's quite a large pocket knife and that's what it is- a big, heavy pocket knife. That said, I'll qualify my review by saying that I sail boats and quite often. The sailing I do is primarily on cruising and one-design sailboats ranging in size from 33' to 52'. I crew on races and enjoy day sailing and a little bit of distance cruising too.
I have been looking for a knife to use exclusively for sailing and this was not my first choice. But this knife has so many features, quality of materials and construction I've realized that it's a good choice for me. This knife will come in handy at all times. I'll use it to undo shackles, untie stubborn knots, cut sandwiches and at the end of the day to uncork a bottle of claret. It's really all here- the screw drivers, can and bottle opener, tooth pick and tweezers. I can even see using it in outdoor situations like camping.
In this world of cheaply made Chinese made products (which I avoid) it's nice to find some old world quality at a good value.

8/31/2010-Review update
OK, I've been using this knife all summer doing the things that I said it would be used for in the above review.
I can honestly say that I have used nearly every feature of the knife while sailing. The shackler comes in handy and so do the pliers when that little shackle buried at the bottom of the forestay is sticky. I have not used the awl yet and can't say that I'm looking forward to having to use it either but that's another story.
This is a fairly large chunk of a tool to carry but it's not any bulkier than any other decent and full featured multi-tool. When deployed the main blade is well balanced with the handle making this an excellent tool.

4a reliable product on board but not convenient in the pocketJan 12, 2012

Victorinox swiss quality excellent, really handy on board.Very heavy for the pocket, it will be much better if it comes with an extra small knife.

4Great knife for a boat crewmanJun 06, 2011
By Edward J. Winne
Great knife from Swiss Army. It's a little large for the purpose (probably the "regular" size would be better) but it has really useful tools, included the serrated blade, which works best for line-cutting. If Swiss Army ever comes out with the same knife in a "flick-open" blade model, that is the only additional thing I'd want!

After searching for a "low volume" sheath for it, I adapted a small flashlight sheath that didn't make this knofe even bulkier on my belt, as the other knife sheaths did.
