Perfect knife for the essentials and your pocketbookDec 09, 2008

This is a great quality knife that hasn't failed me. I bought it almost 12 years ago and still carry it around wherever I go. I was drawn to this model because I wanted a slimmer, sturdy pocket knife that didn't skimp on the important stuff. While other knives have 2 blades, the Rucksack's 1 large blade is sufficient for me. The Trailmaster (or Trekker) and Locksmith are similar models that both have a phillips screwdriver in place of the corkscrew, but I've found that the flatheads on the Rucksack have worked just fine in a pinch. (Also, I've actually used the corkscrew a few times.) Finally, the locking blade is a great safety feature.
As I mentioned earlier, I bring this knife with me wherever I go. That said, although the knife is sleeker than other models due to its minimalist nature, it isn't even the smallest or most compact product out there. I'm personally satisfied with the size, but I'm also usually toting it around a purse. I don't know how it would be to try to lug it around in a pocket every day.
I generally use this knife for "urban survival" (in other words, "everyday living"). However, I am a fan of emergency preparedness and was pleasantly surprised to find it recommended on a website as a good, basic survival knife. Of course, I never fail to bring it along on a camping trip.
All-in-all, I'd say it's a great quality knife with a great value.

My Favorite SA Knife of AllJul 28, 2006
By Online Junkie Whether rockclimbing, backpacking, day hiking, camping or going out to dinner at a restaurant, this is the knife I carry with me everywhere. My only suggested improvement would be to add the one hand opening to the main lock blade. If it had that, it'd be perfect. I also carry the Trekker which does have the one hand opening blade, but it's missing the corkscrew. That said, I still have to give both knives 5 stars because of the quality and utility. I've owned and used these knives for over 30 years and they have never broken or malfunctioned.

Great knife for camping and everyday use.Jan 06, 2007
By DownSouth This is a great knife you can use for simple tasks and outdoor survival. I find a use for it many time a day just around the house. Also, one of the best things about it is the wood saw, which works surprisingly well. I can use it to cut off small branches and saw through relatively thick wood.

Never leave home without it.Nov 01, 2006
By Buckwheat I'm on my second one in about 15 years. I carry it everyday and probably find at least some use for it 5 days a week.
Large locking blade comes in handy for anything from opening boxes and blister packs to cutting apples.
Screwdriver works well for those odd times when you need one and don't have a real one. Opened a can or 2 over the years w/the can opener, used the leather awl for adding an extra notch in my belt, used the mini screwdriver head on the end of the can opener to tighten screws on my glasses.
I work out side and have effectively sawed small tree branches w/out much effort. I often give this knife to co-workers for Christmas.
It's very sturdy, after 8 years w/this one, I think it's about time for another new one.

Handy in variety of situationsMay 17, 2011
By dougie I purchased this knife as a replacement for a long lost knife of the same model (Rucksack). I prefer the finger-nail groove for opening the main blade as opposed to the thumb hole found on other models because it reduces the bulk in the pocket. (I have never had cause to quickly and deftly deploy a swiss army knife.) Personal preference for opening aside, I felt compelled to replace my lost knife with the same model, because for the years that I did have my previous rucksack, it came in handy for a number of everyday needs. Can opener/small screwdriver, bottle opener/large screwdriver and awl thingy are all pretty well known Swiss Army Knife features, so I have no news there. For those unfamiliar with the large locking blade Swiss Army knives, they are a good thing. Carry one knife instead of two for a day hike or a picnic. As far as the saw goes: it really works. I've cut two by fours with it. And the corkscrew may not be the thing you use everyday, but the day that it is the only corkscrew on hand, you will be glad you got a knife with one. Overall, this is my fave of the swiss army knives due to the fact that I have gotten good use out of all the tools on it on a fairly regular basis, and I do not recall me ever being in a situation where I thought to myself "I wish I got the one with the this or that". Shipment was lightning fast.
