4The perfect knife.Apr 03, 2010
I purchaed this knife because I had a similar one I carried for 6 years and lost it. Most of the models like this have a phillips screwdriver instead of a cork screw. I found I needed the cork screw more times than I would have need the philips screw driver!

5A Knife for LifeDec 19, 2009
Have been buying this knife for years. You can choose from a super-deluxe, (has everything except the kitchen sink), or basic model.

But for us one draw back, since 9/11 and Homeland Security my husband has donated a number of these knives to airport personnel because he forgets he is carrying it with him when he goes through security.

5Perfect size and that same high qualityNov 04, 2009
The way the blades snap into place when you open them, it has that precision feel to it. My last Swiss Army knife, which I still have (25 years old), the "Camping" model,.....was becoming too bulky in my front pocket. Also, the key ring mount on the knife used to wear holes in my pocket lining, because it was sort of narrow and sharp. They have fixed that,......the mount is now a tiny bit wider and is perfect. This Spartan model is like my same knife, except without the saw,....hence it is slimmer. My car keys are on it and it fits PERFECTLY in my pocket. I wish everything in this world was made as well as these incredibly handy knives.Within a day of receiving it I was using the screw driver tips to drive screws in.Oh, and watch out,...the knife blades come already razor sharp. Highly recommended.

5Keeps On TickingOct 07, 2009
I've had mine for about 30 years now. It was given to me, second hand, so I'm not even the original owner. No telling how old this thing really is.

Mine is so old, it doesn't have the tweezer or toothpick. No. Not because I lost it. But simply because back then, this model didn't come with it. It may have even had another name back then.

There's no way of knowing, of course, unless you happen to be some sort of Swiss Army historian. On one side of the large blade, it is marked "VICTORINOX SWITZERLAND STAINLESS ROSTEREI". The other side is marked, "OFFICIER SUISSE".

These days, I carry a Leatherman on my Sam Brown belt. However, this little puppy will soon again see service as I clean & sharpen it. Some lucky little family member will get this along with the Western L66 that I got with this knife.

For those who remember, the Swiss Army & Western combination was essentially what most Boy Scouts were equipped with. Real relics. For those who collect knives, you're sure to know that Western is now out of business after nearly a century of producing cutlery that was handed down from one generation to the next.

I now have the task of carrying on that tradition. It's now time for me to part with these mementos so that the next generation in my family could carve out their own memories.

5A piece of history!Apr 10, 2009
I collect Victorinox Swiss Army knives, and I bought the Spartan for my collection. The Spartan is the direct descendant of the original "Swiss Officer's Knife" that Karl Elsener invented in 1897, derived from his earlier 1891 design for his Swiss Soldier's knife (which is represented today by the alox Soldier model).

All of the tools on the Spartan are well thought out and very effective.
1. Large and Small blades: Comes extremely sharp. Large blade is great for general cutting tasks, and is big enough to easily peel fruit. The small blade is great for smaller tasks like opening envelopes. I like to rely on the large blade and keep the small blade extremely sharp in case I ever need a really precise cut.
2. Can opener/small screwdriver: Opens cans. Also works in most Philips head screws.
3. Large screwdriver, bottle opener, wire stripper: The screwdriver and bottle opener work well. You can also use the screwdriver blade for some light prying, such as removing staples. The wire stripper does work, but isn't very effective and I would never use it over a dedicated wire stripper.
4. Corkscrew: Removes corks. If you get creative, you can find other uses for it like using the tip as kind of a marlinspike for untying small knots and pulling cotton out of medicine bottles. You can also buy a small eyeglass screwdriver that fits inside the corkscrew.
5. Awl: I find it awkward to use because of its placement on the back. But is is very sharp and will punch through leather well. Use a twisting motion so you're "drilling" and not just pushing through. It also has a pretty sharp edge so I use it to cut tape and open boxes when I don't want my blades to get encrusted with glue residue. I prefer the awl on the Soldier for punching holes.
6. Tweezers: Good for removing splinters and picking up small objects.
7. Toothpick: Works well in its intended job. I've also used it to point out small locations on a map.

The Spartan is very useful, and I love it for its historical significance. However, for everyday use I would recommend either the Victorinox Swiss Army Super Tinker Pocket Tool or Victorinox Swiss Army Executive Pocket Knife. The Super Tinker adds large scissors (very handy for cutting paper, clipping coupons, etc.) and has a Philips screwdriver instead of the corkscrew. The executive offers a variety of useful tools in a smaller package than the Spartan. There are many Victorinox Swiss Army knives out there, so do some through research and find the one that is best for your needs!
